WebMar 1, 2024 · Congenital diaphragmatic hernia is most often found during a routine fetal ultrasound exam that's done before your baby is born. A prenatal ultrasound exam uses sound waves to make images of your uterus and baby. Occasionally, the diagnosis may not be made until after birth. Rarely, CDH may not be diagnosed until childhood or later. WebDiaphragmatic hernia is a birth defect where there is a hole in the diaphragm (the large muscle that separates the chest from the abdomen). Organs in the abdomen (such as intestines, stomach, and liver) can move through the hole in the diaphragm and upwards into a baby’s chest. When an organ pushes through the hole, it is called a hernia.
